Assignment 5 (Mini Research/SPSS and Qualitative Analysis)

Assalammualaikum W.B.T...
Having an eventful schedule for the entire week made me to work beyond the limit of time. Despite of it, I am very pleased that I have finished up all the tasks for my Assignment 5 according to the time allocated. I reckon this assignment is the toughest one that I ever had for the subject because we need to use a variety of software. Firstly we were asked to come out with a questionnaire and then, based on the questionnaire prepared, we were required to conduct a mini research with a complete report including all the data collected from the survey. I was not familiar with all that and perhaps that there were an IT savvy that can assist me to cope with all the IT’s thingy. However, I have to put my own effort first though that was a first kick of me in that area. Fortunately, my partner, Halil Siri was indeed very supportive and easy to lend his hands to make sure our works could be done in a smooth ride. Even both of us were not an IT savvy, but we would motivate and inspired each other to cooperate and it worked.
As above-mentioned, ICT has never been my filed of interest. Reading through the instructions which are muddy the waters only made me need someone who can explain it explicitly.  I am grateful that course lecturer, Mr. Fariduddin was willingly to settle it down all the confusion by gave a call to our coordinator. After a brief explanation on the task give, that was the point where we have a clear idea of the task. Here were the steps needed to complete the task assigned for this week:
1.    We have to create a questionnaire which was actually a pilot test based on the previous assignments’ topic, Open Source Software (OSS).
2.    We were asked to create a set of questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.com related to the topic assigned after we registered for the signing up requirement.
3.    A set of questionnaire later would be distributed to all the respondents which are B.Ed.TESL students, our colleagues from IPGKDRI and also students from the other course.
4.     After the questionnaire was set up, we send it to the entire respondent via email.
5.    Produce a mini research report by using Google document.
For this part we have to follow the steps specified as shown below:
o   Use Gmail account.
o   Open Google Document.
o   Create New and click Form
o   Add demography and item/question in variety format such as multiple choice, checkboxes and scale.
o   Test it among fellow course mates.
o   Download the completed questionnaire in Excel format which will be imported in SPSS
o   Send to course mates from IPGKS and IPGKDRI.

After a smooth ride in creating the questionnaire in surveymonkey.com, we faced a problem in collecting all the feedback from the selected respondents. At certain level, we have to wait until a few days to get back their responds. Thus, we could not carry on our work to the next step due to that late-replied.  Perhaps it was the first and last because everyone has to manage their time well to deal with their works. Then, a next problem was to deal with SPSS task. As we did not have complete feedbacks, we wouldn’t be able to proceed into analysis part.

Then after managed to collect the data from the distributed survey, we moved to SPSS matter. Frankly, that was the first time I used SPSS and in the same time I did not have a clear idea on how it works. Again our saviour, Mr.Fariduddin played a vital role in helping us to have a better view about that kind of software. He explained in details about SPSS and the way to use it. We were told by him that Survey Monkey and Google Document can record and analyse a simple survey and not for the complicated one. For that, we have to use SPSS as our questionnaires were consists of Checkboxes, Multiple choices and Scale types of question.
We move forward to the last step; producing a report based on the mini research conducted. Although we have experienced it before (making a report in journal form), they were slightly differences in terms of form, arrangement of the data and format. In our journal itself, it should have findings which including all the gathered data and we have to sum up the data in our words such as factors contributed and thought about the situation portrayed by the data.
Personally, I believe all the knowledge that I gained for this week really precious in preparing myself to be a better teacher with a wise knowledge. I agree to my friend’s word, Barbara Kath that ICT is about exploring and learning. Do not asking too much, but put your effort to discover as many thing that you can from the ICT. As a teacher-to-be, it shall be great if you have an extra package likes knowing wisely about ICT that might be helpful in future days. Thanks to those people who participate and volunteer to help us in getting done our assignment.
