Assignment 9 (Database)

This is the last touch on our assignment for this particular subject; Computer in Education. Perhaps all the skills learned can be used wisely in our upcoming days. A token of gratitude to our lecturer in charged, Mr.Fariduddin for his kindly helping us to accomplish each of the assignments assigned. At last, all the difficulties turned to success.

What we did for this week?

Here, we were assigned with a task which needs us to use Database Open Office. It is alien for as I use it rarely in daily basic. Back to the task given, we were asked to create and edit a simple database which included data such as students’ data, parents’ data, and curriculum data and also their co-curriculum data. As it was pretty hard for me to handle it alone, I got my partner’s hand to ensure that we can accomplish this task creatively. I was lucky being in the same atmosphere with my partner, Halil bin Siri.

Based on the aforementioned task, I definitely agree that we have to learn on how to manage the database as the best preparation for class management later. The crucial and full-pack week that I had gone through benefited me a lot regarding to understand the concept of Technology in Education, the implementation of the education in class and so on. Individually, I took all the challenges in the process of completing the assignment as the best platform for me to gain as much as possible the paramount skill that mostly can be used in my class-teaching soon. Get rid all the perception about ICT’s illiterate as we are actually can learn all the required skill for that matter in the class. We should put more effort on learning ICT due to the demanding of this new world. Do not despair easily but work hardly on it.

Before I finished my written journey for this course, again I would like to give my appreciation to our course coordinator, Dr.Siti Fatimah Mohd. Yassin for her guidance and as well as our noble course lecturer, Mr.Fariduddin Wajdi Anthony for his willingness in assisting us to accomplish all the task assigned. Last but not least, a million thanks to my fellow classmates for their great cooperation and commitment in class.

Assignment 8a (Spread sheet) & 8b (Excel)

Assalamualaikum W.B.T

This should be the last week of interaction hours before we will be at the examination field. We were assigned again two tasks which were on Assignment 8a (Open Office Spreadsheet) and Assignment 8b (Microsoft Excel).

Back to Assignment 8a, we were asked to create and come out with monthly expenditure by using Open Office Spreadsheet. As usual, we faced a minor problem especially using spreadsheet where we need to add the balance of the previous month expenditure to the next month. But later then, our lecturer, Mr.Fariduddin had guided us to the right way of solving the problem. After we finished on the first task, we were required to upload it to Google Docs for others view.

Move to the next task which was Assignment 8b; using Microsoft Excel to key in students’ exam results. This is a good practice for me as a future teacher because we will be using this application often in order to manage our students’ data and performance. I was grateful that I could be in this course which assists me to gain all the skills needed as much as possible.
In short, I strongly believe that we should enhance our ability and capability in learning new skills especially in ICT’s era. Thus, perhaps the entire future teacher in the making likes me could be able to endure all the challenges in fostering our competence as well as our students mainly in Technology usage.

Assignment 7a (Open Office Impress) & 7b (Windows Movie Maker)

Assalammualaikum W.B.T

Two weeks before our final examination, we still combat on a few assignments for this subject. Luckily, the task assigned for this week not so tough. Like before, we were assigned with two different assignments which are assignment 7(a) and assignment 7 (b).  Those particular assignments must be done in a frame time given based on the previous topic which is ours, Open Source Software (OSS).

In assignment 7(a), we were required to come out with powerpoint slides by using Open Office Impress. The slide must be talked about the content in the previous Mini Research Project. Working with Open Office Impress was a challenging for us as we used to apply Microsoft Power Point for preparing out slide before. There was a slight different between them though both have been using as office suite tools. However, I found this chance as a great point for me in experiencing new skill and gaining a profound knowledge about ICT’s usage and its variety. After I tried using Open Office Impress, I realized that it will make you patiently works on your task. It has no wrong to explore something new in your learning process and perhaps it will be benefit us in future.  The more knowledge you have, the easier for you to answer any possible questions come you’re your community.

For assignment 7(b), we were asked to produce our own commercial videos about the selected topic which is still on Open Source Software (OSS) by using Windows Movie Maker. I had used this software before for my assignment and entertainment. Thus, there was not so difficult for me to complete this task. We can add in or insert any pictures, videos and audios to make the video more interesting and interactive. For the audio thingy, we were exposed to the software namely as Audacity. It was new for me but I did not see it as problematic matter and it was easy to handle. Through this software, the user were allowed to edit theirs favourite songs either cut it, combining more than one song, changes the rhyme and so on. Finally, the edited audio must be imported to our Movie Maker. The combination of audio and video made our learning more meaningful and convenient.

Perhaps, all those things that I have learnt for this week will bring me a tonnes of benefit in future. As a future educator, we must have a wide knowledge about the ICT which could be used in the next day where the world’s technology growing rapidly in educational field especially.

Assignment 6a (Brochure) & 6b (Booklet)

Assalammualaikum w.b.t…..

After gone through a full-packed week, the task assigned for this week is lighter than last week. We were required to produce or create our own a brochure (Assignment 6a) and a booklet (Assignment 6b) creatively. Like the aforementioned, this week’s task was not too difficult like the one that we did during last week. The reason was as we have already made the same thing during our foundation programme, so we have no doubt to deal with it.
Before that, we were exposed to the introduction of 2D graphic types such as bitmap and vector images. Moreover, we were also learnt about the image file format such as JPEG, GIFF, TIFF, BMP, PNG, WMF and so on. Each terms stand for a different meaning. Making more complicated, we were asked to use the drawing facilities that can be found in the Microsoft Powerpoint and have to produce with any drawing which later need to be saved  as bitmap graphic, either jpg or bmp. In addition we were also assigned with the task where we have to work together regarding to the task of make a draw using both Google draw in docs.google.com and also came out with a drawing by using OpenOffice.org. Later then, it will be used for assignment 6(a) and 6(b) as the attachment or decoration.
Regarding to the task given, we were asked to plan, design and create a brochure or leaflet using Microsoft Publisher. Honestly, I am familiar with this kind of document, so it was really helpful to get that work done. In the brochure created the words attach or the information must be related to the topic for assignment 1, 4 and 5 which was Open Source Software (OSS). Thus, we chose to insert in few types of OSS and their roles or functions.
For a booklet task, we were asked to follow with the same instruction. We have plan, design and create a booklet using book fold function in Microsoft Word. It was not too difficult as I reckoned if we have tried to explore it by ourselves. This task was partner part and I was grateful that he managed to finish it up just in a second. What is the different between brochure and booklet?. After we have done with the both tasks, we justified that brochure was a simple words or gist of explanation but the reader still can have the meaning. Meanwhile, booklet is complete-wordy information about the particular topic.
Hopefully, those kind of learning will be equipped me with the new profound knowledge and have broader my thought about ICT. Learning something new seems hard but it is better than you put yourselves at the same bar as before and ever.

Assignment 5 (Mini Research/SPSS and Qualitative Analysis)

Assalammualaikum W.B.T...
Having an eventful schedule for the entire week made me to work beyond the limit of time. Despite of it, I am very pleased that I have finished up all the tasks for my Assignment 5 according to the time allocated. I reckon this assignment is the toughest one that I ever had for the subject because we need to use a variety of software. Firstly we were asked to come out with a questionnaire and then, based on the questionnaire prepared, we were required to conduct a mini research with a complete report including all the data collected from the survey. I was not familiar with all that and perhaps that there were an IT savvy that can assist me to cope with all the IT’s thingy. However, I have to put my own effort first though that was a first kick of me in that area. Fortunately, my partner, Halil Siri was indeed very supportive and easy to lend his hands to make sure our works could be done in a smooth ride. Even both of us were not an IT savvy, but we would motivate and inspired each other to cooperate and it worked.
As above-mentioned, ICT has never been my filed of interest. Reading through the instructions which are muddy the waters only made me need someone who can explain it explicitly.  I am grateful that course lecturer, Mr. Fariduddin was willingly to settle it down all the confusion by gave a call to our coordinator. After a brief explanation on the task give, that was the point where we have a clear idea of the task. Here were the steps needed to complete the task assigned for this week:
1.    We have to create a questionnaire which was actually a pilot test based on the previous assignments’ topic, Open Source Software (OSS).
2.    We were asked to create a set of questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.com related to the topic assigned after we registered for the signing up requirement.
3.    A set of questionnaire later would be distributed to all the respondents which are B.Ed.TESL students, our colleagues from IPGKDRI and also students from the other course.
4.     After the questionnaire was set up, we send it to the entire respondent via email.
5.    Produce a mini research report by using Google document.
For this part we have to follow the steps specified as shown below:
o   Use Gmail account.
o   Open Google Document.
o   Create New and click Form
o   Add demography and item/question in variety format such as multiple choice, checkboxes and scale.
o   Test it among fellow course mates.
o   Download the completed questionnaire in Excel format which will be imported in SPSS
o   Send to course mates from IPGKS and IPGKDRI.

After a smooth ride in creating the questionnaire in surveymonkey.com, we faced a problem in collecting all the feedback from the selected respondents. At certain level, we have to wait until a few days to get back their responds. Thus, we could not carry on our work to the next step due to that late-replied.  Perhaps it was the first and last because everyone has to manage their time well to deal with their works. Then, a next problem was to deal with SPSS task. As we did not have complete feedbacks, we wouldn’t be able to proceed into analysis part.

Then after managed to collect the data from the distributed survey, we moved to SPSS matter. Frankly, that was the first time I used SPSS and in the same time I did not have a clear idea on how it works. Again our saviour, Mr.Fariduddin played a vital role in helping us to have a better view about that kind of software. He explained in details about SPSS and the way to use it. We were told by him that Survey Monkey and Google Document can record and analyse a simple survey and not for the complicated one. For that, we have to use SPSS as our questionnaires were consists of Checkboxes, Multiple choices and Scale types of question.
We move forward to the last step; producing a report based on the mini research conducted. Although we have experienced it before (making a report in journal form), they were slightly differences in terms of form, arrangement of the data and format. In our journal itself, it should have findings which including all the gathered data and we have to sum up the data in our words such as factors contributed and thought about the situation portrayed by the data.
Personally, I believe all the knowledge that I gained for this week really precious in preparing myself to be a better teacher with a wise knowledge. I agree to my friend’s word, Barbara Kath that ICT is about exploring and learning. Do not asking too much, but put your effort to discover as many thing that you can from the ICT. As a teacher-to-be, it shall be great if you have an extra package likes knowing wisely about ICT that might be helpful in future days. Thanks to those people who participate and volunteer to help us in getting done our assignment.

Assignment 4 (Literature Review Online Material)

Assalammualaikum W.B.T...

Time management is a crucial thing for this hectic week especially because we are given a bundle of task. A successful student is a student who can manage their time well. For me, works are not a burden but more too challenges.

Move on to our task for this week, it is based on our assignment (THINK, PAIR,SHARE) which related to Open Source Software (OSS) for my group. Again, I was paired with Halil b. Siri. However and there is lot of sub-task that we need to finish it off including collecting a few journals and come out with our own report. Referring to the previous assignment that we have chosen, my partner and I have decided to narrow our topic on "The Future of Open Source Software (OSS)" especially in education field. As the necessary requirement, firstly we have to find 2 journals from UKM library, one from Google scholar and one journal from Google book. But, we faced a difficulty to access on the UKM library because we don't have yet the password and ID needed for log it in. Then, we must read all the journal before we can come out with our own report on it.

After a briefly introduction on Open Source Software (OSS) in the first assignment, we focus on The Future of OSS. As teacher-to-be, personally I'm thinking that the usage brings a lot of goods and it's really helpful to ensure all the learning process run smoothly. Using OSS, the educator and the students be able to gain a loads of information and knowledge. For example, they can download more than 2800 educational registered sites and over a million courses on http://www.moodle.org.It also emphasizes on student’s active participation in learning process through online forums and other interactive centers all over the world. Besides Moodle, there are another open software which support LMS such as SAKAI, OLAT and Atutor.

Another great aspect about OSS is you do not need to pay for each software used because it is a free downloading. It also encourage students to try more innovation in learning such as creating blogs and other interactive web application. Thus, the effectiveness of communication can be enhancing among the peer either in or outside classroom. The only thing that we need to consider is about the security level against the viruses.

Last but not least, I gain a plethora of knowledge about the Open Source Software and how it play a vital role in our education system. In a nutshell, this is the first time i have used Open Office to write the report. It is quite same with Microsoft System. Thus, there's no much problem to do it.

ASSIGNMENT 3- WEBPORTOLIO USING YAHOOGROUPS/ DIGITAL PORTFOLIO-CMS/LMS-REFLECTION WEEK 3

Assalammualaikum W.B.T...

Third week, the restless week had been fulfilled by doing on review and analysis of Course/Learning Management System. For that task, I have worked with my colleague, Halil b.Siri. Frankly, I don’t even know about the Learning Management System and its functions on our field (education).Next, the complete written review must be uploaded into the google.doc in forms of doc, pdf and PowerPoint presentation.  Later then, we need to download the document back and share it with our course mates, lecturer and coordinator through yahoo! Mail.

From my personal thought, it is a bit tough to understand the concept of this LMS. First, we have to clear with the term itself. . After that, the review should include the disadvantages and advantages of using it. Additionally, the list of Open Source Software (OSS) must be in the review to make us more aware about the relationship between LMS and OSS. Making a research on this topic is enough to make me having dazzling. However, there is no victory without putting your effort on it. After made some reading and collecting all the information needed, my partner and I had written the review based on our fully understanding and basic knowledge about ICT in Education as shown below:

Learning Management System (LMS)

A Learning Management System (LMS) is software tools designed for delivering, tracking and managing online training and education. The concept for this type of software is web-based and it is created to facilitate the user “anytime, any place, any pace” access to learning input or content. For another instance, it is commercially developed and restricts access to their source code, free and open source models also do exist. In addition, this  virtual learning emphasizes on  student self-service, self-registration, instructor-led training, skill groups management, user notifications and deadlines, manager hierarchies, wait-list management, and of course actual serving if the training material. In order to make it more effective, it is equipped by  automated testing facility to records answers, grades tests, and keeps all data for future reference.

The LMS concerns and focuses more on managing learners to ensure their progress and performances across all types of training activities by keeping all the track and record. Nowadays, it has been used widely by universities and colleges around the world which allow the instructors to conduct their courses and exchange theirs information with the student through the virtual learning. Next, LMS has been functioning to protect private training resources, such as procedure and policy manuals and other sensitive files. Other than that, an improvised LMS system provides interactivity and multimedia tools. So, learning will be more effective and interesting. As an LMS allows users to easily design and deploy customized training modules, it can leverage the knowledge of a few key individuals and distribute it to a large number of employees, customers, or even business partners.

Apart from that, LMS offers a wide-range access because it is web –based system which you can access it at any location and anytime. Regarding to this point, LMS is a flexible system for costuming and managing training records because it use web-platform. It distributes courses over the Internet and offering features for online authoring. Ever improving technology, this system has been used by the teacher and in business field too where the teacher can keep managing their students’ record and performance. In lesson also, it helps educators creating effective online learning communities and create online courses with opportunities for rich interaction.  On the other side, employers can efficiently and effectively deliver and manage learning experiences for their employees. These experiences should be easily accessible and easily tracked.

This web-based training software platform indeed delivering intuitive, powerful e-learning and business training in enhancing the effectiveness of multimedia environment using Web 2.0 technologies like AJAX & Rich Internet Applications. Moreover, it loads with useful features like Flash video, multimedia files, Rich Internet Applications due to the usage of VBScript, JavaScript, and SQL in this system. For example, MySQL is a robust and popular database commonly used by ICT community. By using this database, it is not so difficult to build LMS though it does not have the industrial strength. Furthermore, the LMS also available for open source software. However none of the applications in OSS have all the robust functionalities of LMS. It just has a few which may be close to fulfill the needs. One of the OSS applications for LMS is Moodle. It was developed by Australian native, Martin Dougiamas. It is 100% suite with e-learning or online classes as well as face-to-face interaction. The feature also including multi-language interface and advanced reporting features. For further information, you can go the Moodle website at http//www.moodle.com.

Next, we move to the advantages of LMS. As we concerned, LMS is used to ensure consistency. For this point, LMS is the best side to centralise learning environment. Consistency can be achieved since it each user sees the exact same material with the exact same manner and can be evaluated through common pre-testing and/or post testing methods. Secondly, the LMS assists effectively in tracking and reporting for enhanced program. For example, employers can offer their courses through various media including web-based training, instructor-led training or webinars. The LMS also brings the great impact by producing immediate capabilities evaluation. In this situation, the instructor or the employer can review and evaluate the record of the results for their learners/employees periodically to determine success levels and actual time taken to complete each course and its components. Last but not least, it will provide a central point for organizations to keep up-to-date theirs product description, specifications, requirements, forms, and to allow easy uploading of new product or service information. Thus, the continuous Product and Service Proficiency for Employees who interact with Customers and Clients plays a crucial role to access the same training courses and the same evaluation materials as the employer have.

Due to the development of technology, we can deny that LMS also has theirs weaknesses and disadvantages. One of its drawbacks is pertains to the quality of learning in an e-learning environment which is no guarantee for high security risk in the system.  Secondly, the start-up costs for LMS including hardware, software, staffing and training, can be very expensive and costly as for the administrators especially. Aside from this, majority of the user also believed that Learning Management System is prone to viruses and hacking by the expert hackers. Thus, all the data in LMS can be easily stolen by the third party (hacker). The other glaring disadvantage of LMS is the interface which is the initial reactions to the interface is confusion for many learners. This is due to the difficulties facing by the new learner in figuring out how the interface works and where to get the information she/he needs. This confusion is based on two flaws in the LMS which are simpler tools, with the intent of performing one task seem to be easier for end users to understand and LMS’ are designed as a learning management tool, not as a learning environment tool.

Thus, I reckon this system is simple but efficient, compatible, low tech browser interface and yet it is easy to install. Essentially, most LMS platforms are attempting to shape the future of learning to fit into the structure of their systems, even though most learning today is informal and connectionist in nature.

As a teacher-to-be, it is compulsory to suite ourselves with this method. The concrete reason is LMS have brought a fruitful benefit to the education especially. It had fulfilled the education’s needs and has been implemented in the Western Education System. Thus, we have to level the bar with them in ensuring that we are not left behind from the aspect of methodology. I’m quite impress with the LMS because it will make your education process more organize and flexible. Before that, the educator or employer must master the skill, acquired knowledge and know types of software used for this efficient system. By implementing the LMS, the people should have no worry about the learning process where never you have been either at school, home or workplace. The key factor here is learning process or gaining a bountiful knowledge nowadays is portable and easily access.
